What is a HSN / SAC Code Finder?
Every GST invoice in India needs an HSN code for goods or a SAC code for services. Get the code wrong and your buyer can lose input tax credit, your GSTR-1 can throw errors at the GSTN portal, and your filings can be flagged for scrutiny. This finder gives you the full 22,470-code CBIC master list in one searchable box.
HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) covers 21,789 goods organised across 99 chapters — from "Live Animals" (chapter 01) to "Works of Art" (chapter 97). India uses 8-digit codes for exports and imports, 6-digit codes when turnover exceeds ₹5 crore, and 4-digit codes for smaller businesses. SAC (Service Accounting Code) is a separate 681-entry list for services, all beginning with chapter 99.
The tool is fully client-side: type a product like "laptop" or "consulting", or a code like "8471" or "9954", and matching rows appear instantly with the IGST rate, code type (HSN/SAC), and a one-click copy button. Useful when registering for GST, drafting an invoice, picking codes during GSTR-1 filing, or cross-checking what a vendor put on their bill.

Copy and use
Click the copy button. Paste into your GSTR-1, e-invoice, or accounting software. Always double-check the rate on CBIC before final filing.
Tips to get the most out of it
For small businesses (≤ ₹5 Cr turnover), 4-digit HSN is mandatory on B2B invoices. Picking a more specific 6 or 8-digit code is allowed but not required.
GST 2.0 (effective 22 Sep 2025) simplified rates into 0/5/18/40% slabs with a few special rates. Rates shown here reflect the CBIC master list but always cross-check on the official CBIC portal before filing.
When the same product has multiple sub-headings (e.g., branded vs unbranded, packaged vs loose), the rate can change. Read the description carefully — packaging, branding, and "pre-packaged and labelled" status often shift slabs.
For exports and imports, all 8 digits of HSN are mandatory regardless of turnover.
If your business deals in mixed supplies (goods + services bundled), classify under the dominant element. When in doubt, consult a CA — wrong classification can trigger demand notices.
Real-world scenarios
How Indians actually use this calculator — concrete numbers, concrete plans.
Laptop reseller picking HSN
A laptop reseller types "laptop" and sees HSN 8471 (Automatic data processing machines) and 8471.30 (Portable digital ADP machines, weight ≤ 10kg). For ₹50,000 invoice with 18% IGST, copies 84713010 onto the invoice. Cross-checked on CBIC, filed clean GSTR-1.
IT consultant choosing SAC
A freelance Python developer filing GSTR-1 searches "software development". Finds SAC 998313 (Information technology consulting and support services) at 18%. Copies the code into their invoice template and uses the same code on every monthly bill going forward.
Small shop registering for GST
A grocery store applying for GST registration needs the top-3 HSN codes for their main supplies. Searches "biscuit" (HSN 1905), "soap" (HSN 3401), "cooking oil" (HSN 1507/1512). Enters all three on the registration form within minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Still have a question? Our team replies within a business day.
HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) classifies goods — physical products like laptops, food, clothing, machinery. SAC (Service Accounting Code) classifies services — consulting, software, transport, education, professional services. Both are used on GST invoices, but a single supply uses one or the other, never both.
It depends on turnover: businesses with annual turnover up to ₹5 crore must show 4-digit HSN on B2B invoices (B2C is optional but recommended). Above ₹5 crore, 6-digit HSN is mandatory on all invoices. For exports and imports, all 8 digits are mandatory regardless of turnover.
The rate shown reflects the CBIC master list at the time of data extraction. GST 2.0 (effective 22 September 2025) simplified the rate structure to 0%, 5%, 18%, and 40% slabs, plus a few special rates. Always verify the current rate on the official CBIC portal before issuing an invoice or filing a return.
Wrong HSN can cause your GSTR-1 to throw errors, your buyer to lose input tax credit, and your filings to be flagged for scrutiny. In serious cases (deliberate mis-classification to evade tax), it can trigger penalties under Section 122 of the CGST Act. Best practice: pick the most specific accurate code and verify on CBIC.
The 22,470-code database is built from the official CBIC GST master list and cross-referenced with publicly available HSN/SAC datasets. The IGST rates are pulled from the CBIC notified rate schedule. Last updated: May 2026.

No — exports use the same HSN codes as domestic supplies. The difference is that all 8 digits are mandatory on shipping bills and export invoices, and exports are zero-rated (0% GST under LUT or with refund of input tax).
