About this tool

What is a GST Late Fee Calculator?

Late fee for GST returns is automatic — the GSTN portal will not let you file until you pay it. The challenge is knowing the number before you log in: cash flow planning, client billing, and notice replies all need a precise figure.

The fee is ₹50 per day (₹25 CGST + ₹25 SGST) for normal returns and ₹20 per day (₹10 + ₹10) for nil returns. Caps differ by return — GSTR-3B is capped at ₹10,000, GSTR-9 at 0.25% of turnover, and the recent CBIC notifications give graded relief by turnover slab.

This calculator covers GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-4 (composition), GSTR-9 (annual), and GSTR-9C, applies the right rate for nil vs normal, enforces the per-Act cap, and gives you the CGST/SGST/IGST split you need for the cash-ledger entry.

How to use

Using the GST Late Fee Calculator in 4 steps

No onboarding, no signup. Answer three fields and the numbers update live.

01

Pick the return type

GSTR-1, 3B, 4, 9, or 9C — each has its own fee structure and cap.

02

Enter due and filing dates

Calculator counts the delay in days. Use original due date (not extended).

03

Mark nil if applicable

Nil return = no outward supplies, no liability. Lower rate applies.

04

Read total fee + split

Use the CGST/SGST/IGST values directly in cash-ledger payment voucher.

Best practices

Tips to get the most out of it

01

Late fee is non-waivable and non-creditable — pay in cash, never via ITC. Even ₹100 late fee blocks the next return.

02

For old-period defaults, check CBIC for amnesty notifications. Past schemes have capped fees at ₹500–₹1,000 per return for nil filers.

03

Late fee is per-Act — both CGST and SGST late fees apply. The ₹50/day quote is the combined number; each Act is ₹25.

04

GSTR-9 late fee is 0.25% of turnover per Act, not a flat per-day. For a ₹10 Cr business, that is ₹2.5 L per Act = ₹5 L combined. File on time.

05

Late fee + interest are separate. Late fee covers the delay in filing; interest u/s 50 covers delay in tax payment. Compute both for the full picture.

Examples

Real-world scenarios

How Indians actually use this calculator — concrete inputs, concrete outcomes.

Case 1

GSTR-3B delayed 30 days, normal

30 × ₹50 = ₹1,500 (₹750 CGST + ₹750 SGST). Below ₹10K cap → pay full ₹1,500 in cash ledger before filing.

Case 2

GSTR-1 nil return, 10 days late

10 × ₹20 = ₹200 (₹100 CGST + ₹100 SGST). Small but mandatory; filing blocks otherwise.

Case 3

GSTR-9 of ₹5 Cr turnover, 60 days late

60 × ₹200/day = ₹12,000 vs cap of 0.25% × ₹5 Cr = ₹1.25 L per Act. Lower of two = ₹12,000 per Act = ₹24,000 combined.

Only via specific CBIC notification (amnesty schemes). Officers cannot waive it case-by-case. Check the GST council recommendations and recent CBIC notifications for active amnesty.

No. Late fee is a non-creditable expense, paid only via cash ledger. It does not show in GSTR-2B and cannot be set off against output tax.

You cannot. The portal blocks filing till the fee is debited from cash ledger. Plan cash flow accordingly.

No. Late fee is for delayed filing of return (per day, capped). Interest u/s 50 is for delayed payment of tax (% per annum, on tax amount). Both can apply together.

No, those are auto-populated statements you read, not file. Late fee applies only to returns you file: GSTR-1, 3B, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 9C.
