Dating App Marketing in 2026: Four Platforms, Four Different Approval Systems

Google now certifies dating in two tiers. Meta requires prior written permission. TikTok pre-approves it as a restricted industry. Snap gates it through creative standards. Plus the country list that closes South Asia and the Gulf.

Key Takeaways
  • Google requires certification for dating and companionship ads in two tiers, General and Restricted, and the certification deadline moved from 4 March to 9 April.
  • Google dating ads are ineligible to serve in 18 markets including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and most of the Gulf, which closes the natural regional expansion path for an Indian dating app.
  • Meta grants prior written permission through an application form rather than certifying, and after approval ads may only target people over 18.
  • Meta's Personal Attributes rule is where compliant dating advertisers most often fail: copy that implies knowledge of the viewer's relationship status is a violation regardless of category permission.
  • TikTok lists dating applications as a restricted industry with age and geographic limits, and TikTok remains banned in India.
  • Snap has no dating certification. Age targeting per market, creative safe zones and suggestiveness standards do the gating instead.

Dating became a formally gated category on Google in 2026, which closed the last major platform where a dating advertiser could simply switch on spend and find out later. All four of the big platforms now require something in advance: a certification, a written permission, a pre-approval, or a licence-style submission. None of them grant it retrospectively.

What follows is what each platform requires, where they disagree, and the geography problem that catches every South Asia and Gulf campaign.

Google: certification, in two tiers

Google introduced a Dating and Companionship Ads policy requiring advertisers to be certified before ads serve (Google Ads dating and companionship policy). The certification deadline moved from 4 March to 9 April, after which uncertified advertisers were no longer permitted to run.

There are two tiers. General Dating and Companionship Certification covers mainstream dating services. Restricted Dating and Companionship Certification is required for advertisers promoting restricted content. Applying for the wrong tier is a rejection, and the rejection does not always explain which tier you should have applied under.

The prohibitions are firm and cover more ground than the category name suggests: underage dating promotion, compensated companionship, dating or sexual acts, exploitative or deceptive dating services, mail-order spouse services, and misleading imagery or text that does not match the audience being marketed to. That last one is the most commonly breached, because stock imagery that does not reflect the actual user base of the app is standard practice in the category and is a policy violation.

The geography list

Dating and companionship ads are not eligible to serve in Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia or Yemen.

For an Indian dating app this matters more than it first appears. India itself is not on the list, so domestic campaigns are available. But the natural regional expansion path, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, and the Gulf markets where large South Asian diaspora populations live, is almost entirely closed on Google. Campaigns targeting Gulf-resident Indian audiences have to be planned around that from the start rather than discovered at launch.

Meta: prior written permission

Meta does not certify. It grants permission. Ads for dating services are allowed only with prior written permission from Meta, requested through an application form, and the ads must then comply with Meta's dating targeting requirements and dating ad guidelines (Meta dating ads policy).

After permission is granted, ads may only target people over 18, and they still have to satisfy the rest of Meta's advertising policies, notably Personal Attributes and Adult Content. Dating facilitation, including profile management and aggregator services, can be promoted under an approved permission.

Prohibited: content promoting prostitution or sexual encounters, anything falling under Privacy Violations or Personal Attributes, fraud and deceptive practices, and financial transactions within the dating context such as mail-order brides.

The Personal Attributes rule is where compliant dating advertisers most often trip. Copy addressed as "single women in Chennai" or "divorced men over 40" implies knowledge of the viewer's status, and Meta treats that as a personal attributes violation regardless of the category permission. The workaround is not clever phrasing, it is targeting the segment and writing the copy in the first person about the product.

TikTok: dating is a restricted industry

TikTok lists dating applications among its restricted industries, alongside alcohol, financial services and over-the-counter medication, with age restrictions and geographic limits attached (TikTok regulated commercial activities). Availability varies by market, and in a number of markets dating is simply not an available category rather than a gated one.

TikTok's enforcement runs on a rolling 12 month violation window with escalating consequences, and permanent bans are not reversible. For a dating advertiser that combination argues strongly for getting the category approval settled before scaling creative volume, because dating creative iterates fast and each rejected variant is a strike against a window that does not reset for a year.

Indian dating apps should note that TikTok has been banned in India since June 2020 and remains banned in 2026. TikTok is only relevant to an Indian dating product if it is targeting users outside India through a foreign entity.

Snap: creative standards do more of the work

Snap does not publish a dating certification comparable to Google's. In practice the constraint on Snap is its content standards and its audience composition. Snap's user base skews young, which makes age targeting and creative suggestiveness the binding limits rather than a category gate.

Practical implications: age targeting must be set per market rather than as a single global floor, creative has to stay clear of sexualised framing that would pass on other platforms, and the safe-zone rules for full-screen vertical mean text and CTAs get clipped or flagged if placed under the interface elements. More Snap dating rejections come from those three than from the dating category itself. Detail in the Snapchat ad restrictions guide.

Where the platforms actively disagree

Three splits worth building your workflow around:

  • Approval shape. Google certifies, in tiers, per advertiser. Meta grants written permission via an application. TikTok pre-approves a restricted industry. Snap gates through creative and age standards. There is no single approval that travels.
  • Geography. Google publishes an explicit ineligible-country list for dating. The others handle market availability quietly and inconsistently, so the same campaign plan produces different coverage on each platform.
  • What counts as targeting a person. Meta's Personal Attributes rule restricts copy that implies knowledge of the viewer's relationship status. Google's dating policy is more concerned with imagery matching the actual audience. Copy compliant on one can fail on the other.

Building a dating campaign that survives

  1. Decide your tier on Google before applying. Restricted and General are different applications with different evidence.
  2. File the Meta permission application early. It is prior permission, so there is no launching while it processes.
  3. Map your target markets against Google's ineligible list before the media plan is written, not after.
  4. Audit imagery against your actual user base. Stock photography that misrepresents the audience is an explicit Google prohibition.
  5. Rewrite any copy that addresses the viewer's relationship status. That is the single most common Meta rejection in this category.
  6. Set age targeting per market. A single global floor fails wherever the local requirement is higher.
  7. Keep the landing page consistent with the ad, with visible business identity, real terms, and a working deletion and refund path.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need certification to run dating ads on Google?

Yes. Google's Dating and Companionship Ads policy requires advertisers to be certified before ads serve, and uncertified advertisers were no longer permitted to run after the deadline moved from 4 March to 9 April. There are two tiers: General Dating and Companionship Certification for mainstream dating services, and Restricted Dating and Companionship Certification for advertisers promoting restricted content. Applying under the wrong tier produces a rejection that does not always explain which tier you should have used.

Which countries block dating ads on Google?

Dating and companionship ads are not eligible to serve in Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia or Yemen. India is not on the list, so domestic campaigns are available, but the natural regional expansion into Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan and the Gulf is almost entirely closed on Google.

How do I get permission to run dating ads on Meta?

Ads for dating services are allowed only with prior written permission from Meta, requested through an application form. Because it is prior permission, there is no launching while the application processes. After permission is granted, ads may target only people over 18 and must still satisfy the rest of Meta's policies, notably Personal Attributes and Adult Content. Prostitution, sexual encounters, mail-order brides and financial transactions in the dating context remain prohibited.

Why do my dating ads keep failing on Meta even after approval?

Usually the Personal Attributes rule. Copy addressed as "single women in Chennai" or "divorced men over 40" implies knowledge of the viewer's relationship status, and Meta treats that as a violation regardless of the category permission you hold. The fix is not clever phrasing, it is targeting the segment while writing the copy about the product rather than about the reader. Misleading imagery that does not match the app's actual user base is the other common failure, and it is an explicit prohibition under Google's policy too.

Can an Indian dating app advertise on TikTok?

Only if it is targeting users outside India through a foreign entity. TikTok has been banned in India since June 2020 and remains banned in 2026. Where TikTok is available, dating applications sit on the restricted industries list with age restrictions and geographic limits, and availability varies by market. Because TikTok enforces on a rolling 12 month window and dating creative iterates fast, the category approval should be settled before scaling creative volume.
