What is GST Registration?
Freelancers usually do not think about GST until a client onboarding team asks for a GSTIN, a foreign contract needs compliant export invoicing, or annual receipts start moving toward the threshold faster than expected.
The freelancer GST decision is shaped by service receipts, interstate billing, export treatment, and the commercial expectations of clients. Even below the threshold, voluntary registration can make sense when enterprise invoicing or input tax credit on software and equipment matters.
Home-office address documentation is another common blocker. We help freelancers structure rented-home or owner-family addresses correctly so the application does not stall on basic documentation issues.
For many freelancers, GST registration is less about tax theory and more about getting paid smoothly, looking procurement-ready, and avoiding invoice friction with serious clients.
Who Needs GST Registration?
Freelancer situations where GST matters early
A freelance developer billing a Bengaluru startup from Chennai, a designer serving clients in multiple states, and a consultant invoicing foreign clients may all run into GST-commercial issues before revenue alone tells the full story. Procurement teams often care about invoice compliance before the founder cares about tax thresholds.
That is why the right freelancer GST page should explain not just when tax becomes payable, but when registration becomes useful for smoother contracts, vendor onboarding, and ITC on legitimate business expenses.
How GST registration works
A visible process from document collection to GSTIN delivery, with status updates along the way.
Services and clients mapped
We list the services you invoice with their SAC codes, and note whether your clients are in your state, in other states or abroad.
Home as place of business
Most freelancers register at home. We attach a utility bill and, if the home is rented, the owner’s NOC.
Filed with Aadhaar OTP
The application is filed on your PAN and approved with Aadhaar e-sign. No DSC is needed.
GSTIN, then LUT for exports
Once the GSTIN is issued, freelancers with foreign clients file a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) so exports can be invoiced at 0% without paying IGST first.
Documents needed for GST registration
We confirm which documents apply to your entity type before filing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do freelancers really need GST registration?
Yes if your annual receipts exceed ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh NE) OR you serve clients outside your home state OR you export services abroad. Otherwise voluntary registration is still useful for B2B credibility.
Is GST applicable on foreign freelance income?
Export of services is zero-rated — you charge 0% GST but can still claim refund of ITC on expenses (laptop, software, etc.). You must be GST-registered to claim this refund.
Which GST scheme should freelancers pick?
Regular scheme is recommended — it lets you claim ITC and handle exports. Composition scheme (lower rate, no ITC) is not available for interstate or export services.
Can I use a home address for freelance GST?
Yes. Your home counts as your principal place of business. You'll need a recent electricity bill (any name) and a NOC from the property owner if rented.
What GST rate do I charge clients?
18% is standard for most freelance services. Exports to foreign clients with forex inflow are zero-rated.
